Become A Union Steward

Hello CUPE 4600 Members,

Below you will find information on the role of Steward and how you can be nominated. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact us at info@cupe4600.ca.

The Departmental Steward Nomination Form can be found here: https://forms.gle/fPLQyJvhtt8CS13W8

What is a Union Steward?

CUPE 4600’s Stewards are the frontline in ensuring fair working conditions for more than 3000 TAs, SAs, RAs, and Contract Instructors at Carleton University.

Stewards work with union members in their Department to ensure their workplace rights are being respected, encourage member participation in the democratic leadership of the union, and help those members stay informed on issues and projects the union is engaged in.

Do I need to have union experience to be a Steward?

No, you don’t need to have any experience with unions. All you need is a commitment to ensure you co-workers are treated fairly by management and to support the work of CUPE 4600. Additionally, CUPE 4600 attempts to provide training to all interested Stewards.

What is the time commitment?

The time commitment can vary a great deal, depending on how involved each Steward wants to be. At a minimum, Stewards are expected to devote a few hours each month to the work of the union. This could take the form of attending meetings, putting up posters, or communicating with members.

How can I be nominated for the position of Departmental Steward?

To nominate yourself for the position of Departmental Steward, fill out this online form.

To complete the form, you will need the name and email address of two other union members to be your ‘nominators’. These two individuals should be union members in the same Department you work in, and should be in the same Unit as you (Unit 1-TA/RA/SA, or Unit 2-CI).

What is the nomination period?

Nominations for Departmental Stewards can be submitted from Tuesday, September 6th until 9:00am on Wednesday, October 13th.

Will there be elections after the nomination period ends?

We will only hold elections if more individuals are nominated than the maximum allowed by CUPE 4600’s Bylaws. The number of Stewards in each Department is determined by the number of union members in that Department.

If not more than the maximum number of Stewards are nominated, the nominated individual(s) will be acclaimed without an election.
